Working in a Toxic Workplace – What to Do?

Question:

Hello, I have been working for almost three years in a workplace where employees are mistreated. It is a large organization, but it is very toxic and not a good fit for me. I really want to leave, but I cannot afford to do so until I find another job. I have been searching for over a year, reaching very advanced stages in hiring processes, only to be rejected at the final step. I do not understand why. I feel like something is keeping me stuck in this place. I truly want to leave but have not been able to secure another position. I am racking my brain trying to figure out what is holding me back. I feel desperate and have no energy left to be productive in a place that is making me miserable. I am trying to understand what I might be missing. I am working so hard to find a job, really going through intense struggles, and I just don’t understand why I’m not succeeding.

Answer:

Hello and blessings,

It is truly painful to read what you have written.

Not long ago, I wrote about the issue of workplace mistreatment, and I deeply relate to what you are going through.

Workplace harrassment is one of the most harmful abuses of power and authority.

I wish I had an answer for what is holding you back and preventing you from leaving the toxic environment you are in.

What have I learned from my experiences? At least one small piece of advice:

When you go to an interview for a potential new job, try to enter with as much positivity as possible. Do not carry frustration, bitterness, or a sense of despair.

People interviewing you do not respond well to these emotions, even though your pain is completely justified.

It may be that by approaching these opportunities with a brighter outlook, you will receive the same in return from those on the other side.

Wishing you all the best, and may the new year open doors to new opportunities for you,
